“Rencontres d’été de la Chartreuse will be held July 19 to July 23; this cycle of readings and performances will take you through a selection of new international pieces. You will meet authors and translators, and get a sense of where current discussions are heading in European, African and Caribbean contemporary productions. We have selected eight authors and pieces that were either created or translated in 2023. This cycle will be a great opportunity for people who are passionate about hearing new narratives and new voices, to open their perspectives on the world and its various theatre forms”.

Don Juan. L’homme épuisé, translated by Julie Tirard, will be read by the GRAL, the Chartreuse group of actors-readers, directed by Maya Bösch.

Nigerian authors Dipo Baruwa-Etti and Soji Cole will attend the event and a selection of their work will be read, along with Flemish author Peer Wittenbols, Swiss authors Katia Brunner and Julia Haenni, Haitian authors Jean d’Amérique and Andrise Pierre, and British author Tim Crouch.

biography

Julia Haenni is an independent writer, performer and director working in Switzerland and Germany. She studied drama in the Performing Arts University in Zurich and also studied theatre and German literature in Bern and Berlin. Her work has been presented in Munich’s Schauburg, Vienna’s Kosmos Theatre, Theater Heidelberg, Theater Konstanz, and in many theatres in Switzerland like the Schlachthaus and Konzert Theater in Bern, Zurich’s Winkelwiese, Theater Chur, Basel’s Roxy, Aarau’s Bühnen or Geneva’s Théâtre de Poche. In France, her work was shown in Festivals like Mousson d’été, Ubergang or the Journées du Matrimoine. In 2021, she published Ich will alles! in collaboration with photographer Mali Lazell, which documents the 2019 feminist strike in Switzerland through text and images. The book was nominated for the German photography book prize. From 2020 to 2022, she directed la Junge Marie with Barbara Heynen, where she worked and created theatre pieces with young people. In 2021, she was awarded the Welti Foundation prize as well as the city of Bern Prize for her theatre work.

Maya Bösch is an artist, director, independent curator and artistic director of sturmfrei Company. She studied drama in Bryn Mawr (Philadelphia), with a focus on political theatre. Her work is critically-informed and her research allows her to anticipate new dramatic forms, as well as new aesthetics. She directed the GRÜ/Transthéâtre in Geneva with Michèle Pralong from 2006 to 2012; in 2011 and 2014 she curated the Performance Art Festival in Geneva (« Jeter son corps dans la bataille ») and co-curated the « BONE 17 » Performance-Festival in Bern. In 2015, Maya was awarded the Swiss Theatre Prize. In 2022, she was awarded the Swiss performing arts prize (Prix Suisse des Arts de la Scène) for her piece Manuel d’exil, with a text by Velibor Čolić and Jean-Quentin Châtelain.
